The Letter of Eligibility is issued by the NY State Medical board to approve international medical students to take 12 weeks of electives in NY. Presbyterian Hospital is the only NY hospital that does not need this letter. The application fee is $30, and processing time is estimated at 3 months. Apply once you have been accepted to an elective.

Usually, you will need to show your letter of eligibility when you start your elective. The hospital that has approved your elective application should send a copy of your elective assignment letter to the New York State Department of Education. Once your application and fee are received, New York State will issue you a letter of eligibility.

Some upperclassmen report success applying for 12 weeks of electives all at once, while some sources say you need a separate application for each hospital, and some sources say MSIH is exempt from needing this letter.
